More uses for Cayenne

The following is from the book Left for Dead by Dick Quinn. (Dad, see leg cramps section)
After reading his book, if I was going to buy cayenne, or definitely if I had a heart problem, I would buy his cayenne. His Power Caps sound great! You can read about it here.

Cayenne was used medicinally in ancient Egypt and is found in some of the oldest tomb art. It didn't get to Europe until 1493, when Columbus returned from his first voyage to the New World. He discovered it along the Cayenne River on the largest of the Cayenne Islands off the north coast of South America. The island was later to be home for the French penal colony called Devil's Island.

Cayenne was found to have remarkable healing and disinfecting powers by the ship's doctor while still on the voyage. Crewman on wooden ships get many slivers, which often become infected. Cayenne killed infections and stopped even the most profuse bleeding instantly. It was also effective against scurvy, because of it's vitamin C.

Modern researchers have confirmed many of cayenne's medicinal powers. Dermatologists at the University of California, Davis, have discovered it causes surgical wounds to heal faster than antibiotics.

How I avoid leg cramps

Circulation is the key to avoiding leg cramps and cayenne is the key to circulation. Prickly Ash, Cinchona (also called Peruvian Bark) and Gingko Biloba stimulate circulation in the legs.

How I lower cholesterol and clean my arteries

I take cayenne, garlic, onion and ginger to keep the walls of my arteries clean and help my body rid itself of cholesterol. Cayenne causes my liver to produce less cholesterol. The combination of Ginger, Garlic and Onion has been shown in controlled studies to lower cholesterol as effeciently as drugs, with no liver damage or other side effects. Side effects of cholesterol-lowering drugs can be far more serious than high cholesterol.

How I regulate my blood pressure

The most recommended herbal combination to lower blood pressure is cayenne and Garlic. Valerian is also said to lower blood pressure. I take all three every day because I have a history of high blood pressure.

How I avoid a heart attack

I take Cayenne and Garlic first thing in the morning to make a heart attach less likely. Most heart attacks occur in the morning, when the arteries are constricted because of stress, caffein and other factors. Cayenne and Garlic open the arteries, stimulate the heart and dissolve blood clots that cause 95% of all heart attacks.

How I would stop a heart attack in progress

Dr. John Christopher showed a heart attack can be stopped by putting Cayenne tea under the tongue or having the patient drink it. Just stir up some Cayenne and warm water.

How to make a Garlic poultice

Poultice: A soft moist mass, often heated and medicated, that is spread on cloth over the skin to treat an aching, inflamed, or painful part of the body.

Break off two or three large cloves and lay them on your counter. Start some water heating on the stove, and then lay out a clean washcloth or double thick paper towels. Smack the garlic cloves with the bottom of a heavy glass to lightly bruise or crush them. Now the papery skin will come off easily. Take the bruised cloves and dice them up, or smash them in a garlic press so that the juice and the smell billows out to make you hungry for lasagna. Lay the 2-3 Tablespoons of minced garlic in the center of your washcloth or paper towels and fold in the edges of the cloth, creating what I call a “poultice” or “plaster”. Lay this garlic pad in a bowl or plate and pour the warm/hot (but not boiling) water over it. (If your water is too hot, it may kill some of the powerful healing properties in the garlic. You should be able to keep your fingers in the water without scalding yourself.) Let it sit for 5 seconds or so, and then fish it out and squeeze the excess water out with your hands. Place the warm (not hot!) poultice on the chest, the back, and the soles of the feet (alternately) for about 60 seconds each for viruses, colds, flu, infections, etc.

Garlic poultices can also be used for earache – holding the poultice against the infected ear. For flesh wound infections, hold against the wound lightly. Eye infections, hold over closed eye.

Garlic poultice applied to baby’s chest and feet. Leave no longer than 60 seconds to prevent irritation.

Testimony

It works for pain, inflammation, bites, sores ect.. The semi liquid is just the herb you are using mixed with liquid. You can mix an herb with aloe, water, tincture, tea or an extract creating the semi liquid and then put it on the skin. You use a cloth to hold it on. I usually recommend garlic tea for people that are sick but if the person is too sick or it is a fussy child it might be easier to make a garlic poultice and apply it to the feet. The feet are very absorbent and it will get into the body amazingly quick.

Herb Class: Garlic

Excerpts from The ABC Herbal

Garlic is a wonderful natural antibiotic. It is as powerful as penicillin without the side effects. In my experience, I have found it to be superior to antibiotics in fighting many common ailments. Fortunately, there are herbs which support the body in its efforts to fight infection and help to remove the underlying cause of the disease. Our favorite herb example is garlic, which, as previously discussed, we use in enemas and in external applications as well as internally. Garlic has been called “nature’s penicillin” because it has powerful infection-fighting qualities with no harmful side effects. (It does have one unpleasant, but harmless side effect, its smell.)
In his book, Advanced Treatise in Herbology, Dr. Edward Shook had this to say about the valuable antibiotic properties of garlic:

"The use of garlic in the 1st World War (WW1) as an antiseptic was most sensational. In 1916, the British government asked for tons of the bulbs, offering one shilling a pound for as much as could be produced. A great quantity of it was used for the control of suppuration in wounds. The raw juice was expressed, diluted with water, and put on swabs of sterilized sphagnum moss which was applied to the wounds. Where this treatment was given, it has been proved that there has never been one single case of sepsis or septic results. Consequently, the lives of tens of thousands have been saved by this one miraculous herb."

We have used garlic for respiratory problems, earaches, bacterial infections, sore throats, colds, fevers, abscesses and injuries with excellent results. Although children don’t like it, we have occasionally given them squirts of garlic oil (garlic oil diluted in olive oil) internally. However, we more frequently use it in an enema, or rub it into the skin over the afflicted area. The volatile oils in garlic (which have the antiseptic action) penetrate right through the skin into the blood and lymph within seconds.

Garlic helps stimulate the flow of blood and lymph, promotes perspiration, expels phlegm and otherwise improves the internal environment to make it unfriendly to harmful micro-organisms. In fact, a nurse who worked in a hospital growing bacterial cultures told me how she had proven to herself the powerful effect of garlic. She took a petri dish with a very powerful strain of bacteria and set a peeled clove of garlic in the center of the dish. Within two hours, every bacteria in the dish was dead. She told me it took eight hours for the strongest antibiotic the hospital had to kill that same strain of bacteria when the antibiotic was sprayed over the whole plate. That shows you how penetrating the effects of garlic are.

Garlic is one of the best herbs for an earache. When we were first married, my wife has some sever ear infections which we had a difficult time getting rid of. Then, she discovered garlic. Now, whenever she feels an earache coming on she peels a fresh clove of garlic and puts it in her ear like a hearing aid. (She doesn’t put it into the ear canal; she just sets it on the outer part of the ear.) That’s it. Within the hour, the pain is gone.

Since children usually won’t keep the garlic clove on their ear (unless you tape it in place), we usually use garlic oil. We rub the garlic oil around the ear, especially underneath the ear and jaw moving down into the throat. This encourages lymph flow. Then we put a few drops of warm garlic oil directly into the ear. Make sure the garlic oil is at least body temperature or the coolness of it will cause the ear to contract and increase rather than ease the pain. Rocking or “bouncing” the child also helps to increase lymph flow. I generally give the child a garlic enema as well.

Excerpts from The How to Herb Book

Garlic is called nature’s antibiotic. It contains allicin, a natural antibiotic. One milligram of allicin has a potency of 15 standard units of penicillin. It is effective against toxic bacteria, viruses, and fungus. Garlic contains more germanium, an anti-cancer agent, than any other herb. In tests with mice and rats, garlic fed groups developed no cancer where no-garlic fed groups developed some cancers. In Russia, garlic was found to retard tumor growth in humans.

  • Active against staphylococcus and E. coli bacteria.
  • Good to take for all diseases (anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-cancer) including contagious diseases.
  • Protects against infection.
  • Has detoxifying effects on all the body systems.
  • Improves, tones, and strengthens entire physical condition. Has rejuvenating effect on all cells.
  • Builds endurance and energy.
  • Strengthens body defenses against allergens.
  • Has soft oils that help to emulsify plaque and loosen it from arterial walls.
  • Contains selenium which helps arteriosclerosis.
  • Strengthens blood vessels.
  • Equalizes blood pressure, high or low.
  • Has a sugar regulating factor.
  • Taken internally one of the most effective herbs for killing and expelling parasites.
  • Used in enemas. Besides being used as a straight garlic enema, it is excellent to combine with Catnip for a Catnip/Garlic enema. The catnip pulls mucus, and soothes the cramping of the colon, etc. The garlic kills the germs and parasites, improves peristaltic action, and also pulls mucus.
  • Garlic contains protein, phosphorus, potassium, vitamins A, B, B2, and C, calcium, sulfur, selenium, germanium, allicin, allicetoin I & II, aluminum, chlorine, manganese, zinc, copper, and iron.

Testimonial:

Eating crushed garlic probably works best, but I have had great success (and not so much stink) just swallowing a whole clove like a pill. If it is large, I will cut it in two pieces and take them both. You have to drink a bunch of water with it or your stomach will burn. Without fail, if I swallow a clove of garlic when I first feel like I am getting sick, I either bypass the illness completely, or get such a mild case that it doesn't even really slow me down.

GOOT: Garlic Oil Ointment

A Formula That Will Produce Miracles
Anti-infective . Anti-fungal . Anti-parasites
Warm three tablespoons of Coconut oil over stove until melted and add three tablespoons of olive oil. Remove from heat and add three tablespoons of fresh chopped garlic. Blend at slow speed, then at high speed for two minutes. Use a blender or coffee grinder. Pour mixture through a screen to remove chunks of garlic that the blender may have missed. Pour into a wide mouth jar and label it "GOOT." Place in a refrigerator. GOOT turns into a thick soft paste after one hour.
GOOT, rubbed into the skin, transfers raw garlic oil directly into the blood stream. Apply on the feet of children or infants to fight infections. Rub on chest for chest colds, pneumonia or rub into nostrils for sinus infections. Apply directly to sores inside the mouth. Rub on Athlete's foot or genital area for jock itch. Insert GOOT into vagina or rectum for yeast or other related infections. Apply on rashes any place. Place on cotton swab for ear infections. GOOT kills Candida, parasites, bad bacteria and virus by direct application. In addition, it treats systemic infections by absorption through the skin into the blood supply and travels throughout the body. After two weeks, make a new batch of GOOT.
Testimony:
I have just started trying goot and LOVE it! I had three kids come down with sore throats all in a row and it wiped it out in two days for two kids and one day for the other. I did the goot on the feet a.m. p.m. and also rubbed in on the outside of their throats a few times also. I did also give immune booster, vit C and odorless garlic capsules (only two could take those). But I must say that I believe it was the goot that did the trick as I have done the other things and have never been able to get rid of it that quickly. The only draw back is that our house smelled like an Italian resteraunt for several days making me hungry for garlic bread!

Herb class: Cayenne

Cayenne Powder has been used by researchers in Antarctica to help them bare the extremely cold temperatures. The Cayenne powder is sprinkled into the boots before putting them on. As the powder slowly comes in contact with the skin through the socks, it will draw blood to the feet, thus bringing much needed warms to the extremities. The one draw back is the red powder stains light colored socks.

Excerpts from the book Left for Dead:

One of the most effective stimulants, cayenne targets the digestive and the circulatory system primarily. Cayenne regulates blood pressure, strengthens the pulse, feeds the heart, lowers cholesterol, thins the blood, cleanses the circulatory system, heals ulcers, stops hemorrhaging, speeds healing of wounds, rebuilds damaged tissue, eases congestion, aids digestions, regulates elimination, relieves arthritis and rheumatism, prevents the spread of infection and numbs pain.

Cayenne stimulates every system and cell of the body. Cayenne has been valued around the world for its uses as a stimulant, astringent, antispasmodic, circulatory tonic, anti-depressant and antibacterial agent. In addition, cayenne acts as a diaphoretic to induce sweating, a rubefacient to increase circulation at the skin’s surface and a carminative to help prevent and eliminate gas.

As a condiment, cayenne aids digestions and soothes intestinal ailments by stimulating the stomach to produce mucous.

In the circulatory system, it helps the arteries, veins and capillaries regain the elasticity of youth by feeding the cell structure. It helps equalize circulation by regulating the flow of blood from the head to the feet. Cayenne strengthens the pulse by increasing the power, not the frequency... In addition to helping prevent the build-up of cholesterol which can narrow the veins and arteries, cayenne also helps thin the blood and prevent blood clots that can clog the arteries and cause heart attack and stroke.

In more ways than any other herb, cayenne gets the blood moving. Touted as “the purest and most certain stimulant known to man,” cayenne is considered to be one of the best crisis herbs. By helping the circulatory system operate more efficiently, the snappy red pepper boost the energy level and eases the damaging effects of stress on the body.

By increasing the circulation of the blood to peripheral tissues throughout the body, cayenne helps deliver necessary nutrients to inflamed and infected areas. Studies show that the nutrients in food ingested with cayenne are assimilated faster and more easily.

The herb itself contains many nutrients essential to the health of the circulatory system including alpha-tocopherols, vitamin C and minerals. Cayenne also contains a high amount of vitamin A (beta-carotene) which aids in healing ulcers... Cayenne’s high mineral content, including sulphur, iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, makes it an effective treatment for diabetes, gas, arthritis, pancreatic and throat disorders.

One of the most remarkable qualities of Cayenne is its ability to act as a catalyst. Cayenne intensifies the beneficial effects of other herbs by ensuring speedy and thorough distribution of the herb’s active components to the important functional centers of the body such as those responsible for metabolism, data transmission, cellular respiration and neural hormonal activity.

Just a small quantity of Cayenne can dramatically increase the efficiency of most herbs, this catalyst herb is added to nearly every herbal combination available. Added to garlic, for example, Cayenne speeds up the antibiotic action of the other herb. Cayenne boosts the power of garlic so much it’s akin to taking liquid penicillin. Together, garlic and Cayenne lower blood pressure safely and rapidly.

Cayenne is used in formulas for pain relief, infection, respiratory ailments, female problems, thyroid balance and heart treatments. Cayenne is an ingredient in laxatives, diuretics and ulcer medication. Added to ginger, Cayenne helps clean out the bronchial tubes... This powerful stimulant can also be used as a relaxant to soothe gas, diarrhea, asthma and toothaches.

Externally, the aromatic herb makes a very effective pain killer or anesthetic. Cayenne has been used in poultices for centuries as an irritant or counter-irritant. Exposure to the pungent herb can cause pain but prolonged exposure deadens the nerves to pain.

Folk medicine prescribes Cayenne powder, plaster, poultice, tincture and ointment for a variety of aches and pains including arthritis, rheumatism and bursitis. Cayenne has also been touted as one of the most powerful cures for hemorrhoids. Application of Cayenne ointment brings relief from hemorrhoids but it is also recommended that the patient be warned of the pungent herb’s potency... Mexican folklore also refers to the use of Cayenne as a pain killer and it has been applied dry on wounds.

With the advent of the gelatin capsule, people who could not tolerate the bite of the red pepper can take it with ease... It is important to remember that a little Cayenne goes a long way. Nature made the red pepper hot for a reason so if you can’t swallow too much outside the capsule, don’t try to swallow to much inside the capsule. People who don’t usually eat hot spicy food should build tolerance slowly.

Tips from The Bulk Herb Store:

  • This is not like the Cayenne you may find on a spice rack in a supermarket. This is much fresher and more effective.

  • To avoid stomach upset, Cayenne should not be used internally on an empty stomach.
Like most spices, it is potent and a little goes a long way. Nonetheless, we do go wild with it. This is probably our all time favorite herb. Second, only to Garlic.

  • We hardly make a tincture or fill capsules without adding a little bit of Cayenne. It not only aids with the digestion of other herbs, but it magnifies their properties too. Of course, it can be used in many other types of remedies. Except as a tea, as powders are not normally used in tea combinations.

  • The only time Cayenne is used in teas is during a trauma and/or medical emergency. When it comes to hemorrhaging, heart attack, shock, and so on, a cup of warm water with no more than a teaspoon of Cayenne is what we have used with great success. Of course, it is not a pleasant drink, but during such immediate and life threatening situations, it’s what we choose.

  • Cayenne is a food and spice. Thus, we keep it in the kitchen as all other food ingredients. We add it to many dishes (salads, meat dishes, stir fry, vegetables, and on, and on) to enhance the flavor and add nutritional value to our foods. We recently started adding a tiny bit of Cayenne to our home-made ice cream recipes. We first had this on an outing in Ohio, and it was unforgettably good.
